Storyline

Following the assassination of the head of Iran’s Quds Force, General Qasem Soleimani, Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement saying, “the world cannot afford another war in the Gulf.”

The statement read today (3 Jan) by UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said that the UN chief had “consistently advocated for de-escalation," and added that “this is a moment in which leaders must exercise maximum restraint.”

Haq noted that the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, “has been very active in working with the various groups and make sure that the situation on the ground can be as stable as possible.”

Regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, Haq said “the Secretary-General has viewed this a significant diplomatic achievement and has repeatedly called on all parties to continue to uphold it,” adding that it is “an agreement that is in force and we hope that all parties will abide by it.”

Soleimani was targeted and killed on the outskirts of Baghdad airport, in a strike that was ordered by US President Donald Trump, according to a statement issued by the US Department of Defense.

Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was also among those killed during the strike, according to media reports. His Kataib Hezbollah group had been blamed by the US for a rocket attack which killed a US civilian contractor in Iraq a week ago, and he led a group of militias within Iraq, aligned with Iran.
