Storyline

UNICEF’s representative in Yemen, Sara Beysolow Nyanti today (28 Jan) welcomed the release in Sana’a by the Ansar Allah of 64 children allegedly captured during military operations.

UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York that “UNICEF hopes that this step also leads to the signing by the Ansar Allah of the Action Plan to end the recruitment and use of children in the conflict in Yemen.”

Meanwhile, the Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, today briefed the Security Council via videoconference about the recent alarming military escalation in Yemen.

Dujarric said that Griffiths “reiterated the importance of stopping the ongoing military escalation before it is too late.”

The spokesperson said that Griffiths “warned that recent developments jeopardize the progress the parties had made on de-escalation and confidence building.”

Last week, the Special Envoy told the Council that he was fairly confident that the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement was moving in the right direction. He noted that no one should be satisfied with the record of the Stockholm agreement’s implementation, but the UN and the parties remain committed and active as ever to implement the commitments made a year ago.
