4. SOUNDBITE (English) Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa:
“We have an immense task before us to rebuild our shattered lives and economies. The African continent has so far had lower rates of infection than many other parts of the world, but because of weak health systems, resource constraints and pre-existing economic vulnerabilities the long-term impact of the pandemic on Africa will be quite severe. The African Union has developed a COVID-19 strategy. And as part of that, it has established an A.U. COVID-19 Response Fund to assist member States in funding an effective response to the pandemic.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland:
“How did we come to value so little, take for granted, essential work and essential workers? We have been shown what the consequences are of privileging those remunerated in a financially to global economy over those who worked in the provision of universal basic services or indeed worked in the real economy. The task now at hand to create a society that is more equal one in which all work is valued and all jobs are decent fulfilling and secure together with adequate social protection is far from an easy undertaking given the current geopolitical atmosphere.”

8. SOUNDBITE (German) Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany:
“I welcome the fact that the ILO has also developed guidelines on occupational safety during the pandemic because it is important to prevent the coronavirus from becoming a social crisis. We can only do that as a broad community effort. And so, the pandemic shows us once again, albeit particularly painfully, how important it is for us to work together internationally. That is why we need international organizations like the ILO to be a driver to develop best practices and standards.”

10. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Mikhail Mishustin, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation:
“Russia attaches particular importance to the implementation of the concept of a better future labor on the basis of the ILO Declaration adopted last year. Its guidelines form an effective strategy for overcoming the consequences of a pandemic by improving working conditions, introducing innovative technologies in normalizing labor relations and stimulating job creation.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden:
“We see worrying developments in several countries concerning workers’ rights and that countries are overlooking workers’ rights in the fight against the pandemic. Human rights in the workplace must be safeguarded in accordance with the ILO's core conventions. The right to form and join trade unions and the right to collective bargaining are essential components of the right to work. It is part of the democratic fabric. It reduces inequality and improves conditions for women's economic empowerment.”

“The pandemic shows us once again, albeit particularly painfully, how important it is for us to work together internationally,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said today as she and other global leaders addressed the ILO’s Virtual Global Summit on COVID-19 and the World of Work.
More than 50 Heads of State and government, as well as the heads of a number of UN and international agencies are taking part in today’s “Leader’s Day,” as of part of global discussions on COVID-19 and the World of Work, taking place online 7-9 July. Covering all regions, they will be addressing the summit via video message.
The Global Summit on COVID-19 and the world of work is the largest ever online gathering of workers, employers and governments. Participants are discussing how to address the economic and social impact of the pandemic, which has laid bare the extreme vulnerability of millions of workers and enterprises.
