“All of these are to ensure an enabling environment for the delivery of humanitarian assistance as part of support that the mission is giving to the national response plan on COVID-19. UNMISS worked in conjunction with the UN family, development partners and the state government to ensure that we are ready to execute [a] proper response to this scourge that is affecting us all. With this contribution from UNMISS we trust that this facility, the critical care center, will be used for the purpose that it is meant [for].”

“Yesterday, I started renovations at the Civil Hospital and I want all of us to extend [our] hands--UNMISS, business people and even me as the Governor will extend my hand.”

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan and development partners rehabilitated and handed over 16 rooms to the COVID-19 Intensive Care Centre in Yambio, Western Equatoria.
This initiative was taken jointly with the State COVID-19 Taskforce to ensure a fully equipped isolation facility in Yambio.
Apart from refurbishing the rooms, UNMISS handed over a 50KVA generator, 20 beds and mattresses, 120 bed linens and a water tank with a capacity of 5000 liters.
Stella Abiyomi, Acting Head of Field Office, UNMISS Western Equatoria, says the center is designed to help authorities and communities in Yambio in COVID-19 preparedness.

The handover was officiated by General Alfred Futuyo, Governor, Western Equatoria, who expressed his appreciation and reaffirmed his commitment to protect the facility. He also called on the partners to extend their help to the Yambio Civil Hospital.

As of 26 August 2020, a total of 2,515 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in South Sudan and 47 deaths reported. The majority of patients diagnosed have been asymptomatic. In Western Equatoria, 164 alerts have been investigated of which 5 are confirmed cases. There have been no deaths so far. Contact tracing extended to some 110 people and 87 samples are awaiting laboratory results.
