The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said some 11,000 asylum-seekers and refugees are still sleeping rough after devastating fires levelled Greece’s Moria camp on Lesvos island last week. The Agency said it is supporting the Greek-led response by setting up temporary shelter and providing relief items to a vulnerable and exposed population, including thousands of children.
With only pavement for a bed, this boy and his family have slept in the street for days. Fires destroyed their home in a camp for asylum-seekers on Greece’s Lesvos island.
UNHCR said some 12,000 people lost their shelters in the blaze that levelled Moria camp. Mostafa, an Afghan asylum-seeker, said he was looking after his parents and siblings but could provide them with the protection they need.

Greek authorities, who hold overall responsibility for the management and coordination of the humanitarian response, have now identified a location on Lesvos, close to Mytilene town, in the area of Kara Tepe, to temporarily house the most vulnerable people. UNHCR said it was assisting in the setup of this new temporary tented facility to accommodate those most at risk and providing technical advice and sharing expertise regarding site setup and planning.

UNHCR and its partners are supporting Greek authorities leading on humanitarian efforts, but the Agency said needs are still great. UNHCR said, beyond short-term relief, the answer lies in long-term solutions. It stressed that those who fled dangers at home in search of safety are looking for a life of dignity that the street cannot provide.
