“Brazil stands out as the world’s largest producer of foodstuffs, and for that reason there is such a strong interest in spreading out disinformation about our environment. We are open to the world to offer our very best, our agricultural products. We have never exported so much. The world increasingly relies on Brazil to feed itself. Our is a tropical rainforest and as such it does not allow fire to be spread out within it. Fire outbreaks tend to occur virtually at the same places in the eastern surroundings of the forest, where Brazilians of indigenous ancestry burn their farmlands in search of livelihood in already cleared areas. Criminal fire outbreaks are fought with stringency and determination.”

In a video message, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro today (22 Sep) told the General Assembly’s General Debate that segments of the Brazilian media have “politicized” the COVID-19 pandemic “by spreading panic among the population.”
Bolsonaro said “under the mottoes ‘stay at home’ and ‘we will deal with the economy later on’ they almost brought about social chaos to the country.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been 4,544,629 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 136,895 deaths in Brazil since the start of the pandemic.
The pandemic, Bolsonaro said, “teaches us a major lesson, which is that we cannot possibly depend on just a few nations for the production of essential inputs and means for our survival.”
The drug hydroxychloroquine he said, “had a 500 percent price increase at the onset of the pandemic.”

According to the UN Environment Programme, forest fires in Brazil have been started deliberately to make way for oil palm and soybean plantations, or pasture for cattle.
The Brazilian President’s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
