The 75th General Debate kicked off Tuesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with only countries’ ambassadors physically present due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
The General Debate is usually a globally unique occasion at which presidents and heads of state meet in the building of the UN General Assembly on the East River and address the world audience. This year, because of the pandemic, world leaders will be staying away and have been invited to send in pre-recorded videos of their speeches which will be broadcast “as live”.
Speeches are expected to be introduced by a New York-based representative of each state, who will be physically present in the GA Hall.
Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
