4. SOUNDBITE (French) Issoufou Mahamadou, President of Niger:
“I take this opportunity to solemnly announce that this is the last time that I will speak as President of the Republic of Niger. The next presidential election to be held in December in my country will be an opportunity for Nigeriens to choose their new leader. When you know that this is the very first time in its history that Niger will experience a democratic transfer of power, this date fills me with pride.”

6. SOUNDBITE (French) Issoufou Mahamadou, President of Niger:
“This election day will be a decisive moment for Niger as part of its efforts to deepen its democratic process and its political maturity. Like other African countries, we are in democratic transition. Niger is gradually consolidating its democratic institutions and I have no doubt that in the long term, our country will leave far behind the memories of the hardship which have marked its institutional development for so long.”

8. SOUNDBITE (French) Issoufou Mahamadou, President of Niger:
“Niger loses approximately one hundred thousand (100,000) hectares of arable land each year, which puts people in a situation of food insecurity. It is therefore necessary to protect the land and the ecosystem essential to human life. The time has come to create a new social contract for nature on a planetary scale. To better recover from the crisis, we must align our exit strategies with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and create a sustainable and inclusive economy by reducing the risk of future shocks.”

In his speech to the UN General Assembly, Issoufou Mahamadou announced the end of his mandate as the President of Niger in December of this year and said “when you know that this is the very first time in its history that Niger will experience a democratic transfer of power, this date fills me with pride.”
Mqahamadou was elected Niger’s President in 2011, following a military coup in February 2010.
“I take this opportunity to solemnly announce that this is the last time that I will speak as President of the Republic of Niger,” Mahamadou said in his speech. “The next presidential election to be held in December in my country will be an opportunity for Nigeriens to choose their new leader.”
Since becoming independent country in 1960, Niger has suffered through many political upheavals including several military regimes.
“This election day will be a decisive moment for Niger as part of its efforts to deepen its democratic process and its political maturity,” said Mahamadou. “Like other African countries, we are in democratic transition. Niger is gradually consolidating its democratic institutions and I have no doubt that in the long term, our country will leave far behind the memories of the hardship which have marked its institutional development for so long.”
He also highlighted peace and security concerns in the Lake Chad region as well as COVID-19 pandemic effects on his country as well as climate change and desertification.
“Niger loses approximately one hundred thousand (100,000) hectares of arable land each year, which puts people in a situation of food insecurity. It is therefore necessary to protect the land and the ecosystem essential to human life,” Mahamadou said. “The time has come to create a new social contract for nature on a planetary scale. To better recover from the crisis, we must align our exit strategies with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and create a sustainable and inclusive economy by reducing the risk of future shocks.”
Unlike previous years, the 75th gathering of world leaders at the United Nations in New York is happening exclusively online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The prerecorded video messages of Heads of State and Government are played at the GA Hall with only the countries’ UN ambassadors physically present.
