“Of course, there are many differences, and let me emphasize that the reason that we are here is of course to listen to the differences. There are very strong different narratives, there are of course a lot of emotions after nearly ten years of conflict, and in the room, there are tense moments. This is to be expected but I think perhaps more importantly, what we experienced this week, I think is that more and more people were listening to each other tentatively, and they were listening with respect, and there were also exchanges that addressing each others.”

“I am pleased to be able to inform you that the small body that we have all agreed and I think actually the first time that we agreed both on the agenda on the next meeting and agreed on the time of the next meeting. So the next meeting will be staring on 25th January, covid situation allowing, and we will be discussing is then constitutional principles or basic principles of the constitution. That is the agreed agenda.”

Concluding the 4th session of the small body of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said that wide range of topics were discussed, adding that while there were many differences, they were expressed respectfully and there are more than quite a few areas where it is possible to seek common ground.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva today (04 Dec), Pedersen said that he was pleased to inform the media that the small body has agreed both on the agenda and the time of the next meeting.
He said, “the next meeting will be staring on 25th January, COVID situation allowing, and we will be discussing is then constitutional principles or basic principles of the constitution. That is the agreed agenda.”
