Getting married in a refugee camp doesn’t mean giving up on your dream wedding dress. Nour has owned a wedding shop in Zaatari Camp for three years and with Valentine’s Day approaching she’s helping brides prepare for their big day.
Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan is home to 80,000 Syrian refugees and has been open since 2012. There are over 500 different shops in the camp, most located on the famous ‘Shams Elysee’, including Noor’s Wedding Shop/Salon.
She designs the dresses and does hair and makeup for the brides
“This work, I feel that it is art. If this work touches your heart, you know you have to do it,” Nour said.
Mona, also a Syrian refugee and a bride to be came to Nour after a recommendation.
“I’ve come to choose a wedding dress as I had heard about Noor’s Salon, the dresses are beautiful and her work is so nice,” she said. “I think I will choose a red dress because its Valentines’ Day and my fiancée said he likes red!”
The COVID-19 pandemic has meant fewer weddings. A third of refugees in Jordan have lost their jobs, but it hasn’t stopped Nour.
“The number of weddings has become less because of COVID-19, because of that I take the makeup and hair tools and do their hair and makeup at home and even take the dresses to their homes.” Nour said.
This Valentine's Day she’s ready to celebrate all kinds of love
“Valentines doesn’t have to be boyfriend and girlfriend, it can be brothers, sisters, relatives,” she said.
