Storyline

The World Health Organization (WHO) launched an Ebola ring vaccination in Butembo, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Last week (7 February) the DRC Ministry of Health declared a new Ebola outbreak, after a case was identified near the city of Butembo in North Kivu Province. So far, there are four confirmed cases, including two deaths.

Ring vaccination efforts began over the weekend. More than 50 high-risk contacts have been vaccinated in Biena Health Zone, where the first case was detected and as of 15 February, vaccination efforts had also begun in Katwa Health Zone.

Matanda Hospital—where the launch took place—is where the first confirmed case patient was treated before passing away.

Around 1200 vaccines arrived in Butembo last week and another 1200 in Goma, a city not too far away in North Kivu. There is enough vaccine supply in the country to vaccinate 16 000 people. These can be used to protect high risk contacts and health workers.
