Serbia has extended its national COVID-19 vaccination rollout to include refugees and asylum-seekers, providing over 300 people residing in reception centres with AstraZeneca jabs.
On Friday (26 Mar), Serbia became one of the first countries in Europe to vaccinate refugees and asylum seekers. Fifty-three people at the centre in Krjnaca, on the outskirts of Belgrade, received the AstraZeneca jab in a day, and by Monday over 300 refugees and asylum seekers there had received their first dose of the vaccine.
Over 1.3 million people have received a first vaccine dose in Serbia since the programme started on 24 December and more than 860,000 citizens have received a second jab. Some 30 refugees and asylum-seekers in private accommodation in Serbia were vaccinated earlier in March, but Friday was a first for a reception centre. The country hosts around 4,883 refugees and asylum-seekers.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, worked with authorities to ensure that refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants were included in the national immunization plan adopted in January.
It has also worked with WHO, other UN agencies and NGOs for the inclusion of refugees in COVID-preparedness and response plans.
