“We, at the European Union, we are a staunch promoter of vaccine multilateralism with COVAX at the centre. The European Union and its Member States have contributed to COVAX with more than 2.8 billion euros, and have exported more than 240 million doses of vaccines to 90 countries. It means more than any other region.”

“The world’s biggest changes stand from new technologies and these technologies can be both disruptive and empowering. Just think of artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing, or genetic engineering, autonomic weapons, and surveillances. One of the biggest questions we face is how to ensure that the rules we so need for these emerging technologies, would reflect the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, if not, technology will be used against individuals and communities in a nightmarish scenario.”

“Sitting here, in the Security Council is a serious responsibility politically and even morally. The United Charter gave this Council the supreme say on matters of peace and security. And now for us, the European Union will not accept an alternative – no other organization that today exist can turn to. So the Security Council must provide the support and protection to people in conflict zones depends upon.”

Addressing the Security Council today (10 Jun) via a video link, Borrell reiterated, “We, at the European Union, we are a staunch promoter of vaccine multilateralism with COVAX at the centre.”
