Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are in need of urgent assistance. Majority are seeking shelter in towns and villages where living conditions are dire particularly for the most vulnerable: women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
As the lava begins to cool, the government is encouraging people to return to their homes but many say they have lost all their property and need assistance to rebuild their lives. UNHCR and partners are working closely with authorities to help, providing shelter, water and food. But much more funding and support is urgently needed. The eastern region of the DRC has been plagued by civil war for decades displacing over 5 million people.
SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Paul, Displaced Congolese:
“The roads were full of people fleeing. We would walk for about a kilometre and then we would get tired and stop.”
On May 22nd, Mt. Nyiragongo erupted in the Democratic Republic of Congo, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee from the city of Goma. Authorities are now encouraging people to return home, but for many going back is difficult after losing everything. This land covered in lava rocks was once Esperance and Jean’s home
SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jean, Displaced Congolese:
“We saw a rain of fire and rocks. Everything burned down. We are suffering here. We are sleeping outside. We are scared that the cold at night will make us sick. Our homes, clothes, blankets, beds were destroyed. We had chicken and goats. We have nothing now.”
SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jean, Displaced Congolese:
“I was a tenant. I don’t know if my landlord will rent my house to someone else. I didn’t have my own home.”
UNHCR and partners are providing shelter, blankets and other basic needs. But people here need much more to rebuild what was lost.
