UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the Ethiopian Agency for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA), and the non-governmental organization WISE are registering Eritrean refugees in Addis Ababa who fled from the now destroyed Hitsats and Shimelba camps in Tigray.
Refugees are issued with ID cards to regularize their stay in the Ethiopian capital. They are also supported to open a bank account on site in which UNHCR will be providing a one-off cash assistance to cover their immediate needs.

Eritrean refugees fled the Shimelba and Hitsats camps in north Tigray after they were destroyed at the start of this year. The three-year documents will enable refugees to access assistance, services, and protection.
As of 9 August, 892 refugees were issued with ID cards and proof of registration documents.
