“I feel that women who have decided that they want to join public life, particularly, politics, it’s important to give them the encouragement and the support and these kinds of workshops are very, very good for building the capacities of women and their legislative capacity. This parliament, we believe, will make a lot of difference, for the simple reason of the number of women in the parliament is reasonable. It’s not what we would like but its reasonable.”

Supported by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the South Sudan Women’s Empowerment Network hosted a two-day workshop in Juba aimed at enhancing the capacities of newly appointed women parliamentarians, both at the state and national levels.

The aim of the workshop is to build networks of solidarity to help women develop and advocate for a legislative agenda that fully includes women’s needs and interests.

As this young country starts drafting a permanent constitution, UNMISS considers it is more important than ever that women take their rightful place in state- and nation-building and their voices are equally represented in politics, decision-making and governance.
