“The Moroccan new act of aggression which continues to date with full impunity has ended almost 30 years of ceasefire and has consequently led to the collapse of the United Nations peace process in Western Sahara. Faced with the Moroccan new act of aggression and the total inaction by the Security Council, the Saharawi people under the leadership of the Frente Polisario, had no option but to exercise out legitimate right to self-defence to confront the Moroccan new act of aggression and to defend the sovereignty of our country.”

Storyline

Following the Security Council’s vote to renew the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum on Western Sahara (MINURSO) today (29 Oct), Moroccan Ambassador Omar Hilale told reporters that Morocco will go “whenever (newly appointed Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura) wants, wherever he will decide” to organize roundtable negotiations.

The Council adopted a draft resolution extending the mission for another year, until 31 October 2022, with 13 votes in favour and two abstention, the Russian Federation and Tunisia.

Hilale said, “the roadmap is very clear. What we are missing for the time being is one party who just suddenly decide not to participate to the roundtable. Let’s hope. As diplomat, I am always optimistic.” He expressed hope that “for next year we will be able to say, problem is resolved, and the autonomy has been endorsed by the Security Council.”

For his part, a representative of the Polisario Front, Sidi Omar, said Morocco’s deployment of its armed forces to the border town of Guerguerat constitutes a “new act of aggression” which “has ended almost 30 years of ceasefire and has consequently led to the collapse of the United Nations peace process in Western Sahara.”

Omar said “a new war that will have dire consequences on peace and security in the entire region” has been ignited.

He said that by its “total inaction,” the Security Council has already doomed to failure the mission of the new envoy, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura, in a way that will seriously undermine the prospects for reactivating the peace process and prolonging the stalemate.”
