“Turning to Yemen, I can tell you that the Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the arrests and detention of two UN staff members in Sana’a by the Houthis earlier this month. The two UN staff members are being held without any justification or charge and have been prevented from communicating with their families and offices. Before the Security Council meeting on Yemen last Thursday, we received assurances from the Houthis that the two staff members would be released. We also reported those assurances to the Security Council. However, as of today, the staff members remain in detention, in breach of UN privileges and immunities and in direct contravention to the assurances we received last week. We call again for their immediate release.”

A UN Spokesperson said, the Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the arrests and detention of two UN staff members in Sana’a by the Houthis earlier this month,” and called on their “immediate release.”
Speaking to reporters today (17 Nov) in New York, Stephane Dujarric said that he two UN staff members are being held “without any justification or charge and have been prevented from communicating with their families and offices.”
He continued, “before the Security Council meeting on Yemen last Thursday, we received assurances from the Houthis that the two staff members would be released. We also reported those assurances to the Security Council. However, as of today, the staff members remain in detention, in breach of UN privileges and immunities and in direct contravention to the assurances we received last week.”
He reiterated the call again for their “immediate release.”
The two UN staff members were detained on 5th November and 7th November.
On another Yemen-related note, Dujarric said that the UN condemned the summary executions of 10 individuals belonging to local security forces that took place in Hudaydah governorate on 13 November.
