Three consecutive failed rainy seasons have brought on severe drought in Ethiopia’s lowland regions of Afar, Oromia, The Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ (SNNPR) and Somali regions drying up water wells, killing livestock and crops and pushing hundreds of thousands of children and their families to the brink.
Awralyas Internally Displaced People site is hosting around 2,000 drought affected people.
Men, women and children gather together with animal carcasses in the background in Sagalo village, as strong wind blows dust all over the place.
The drought has resulted in chronic shortage of animal feed and water, forcing the pastoralist communities to migrate very far from their usual movement patterns. The loss of cattle is very visible in drought affected areas of the Somali region.
Gebi’as village 23 km northeast from the town of Gode, is one of the hardest drought-hit areas in Somali region. Animal carcasses are scattered around the dry field, which was once was a grazing land. The number of livestock dying from lack of food and water is staggering and increasing by the day.
In Beda’as kebele, the water pond is depleted due to the drought. This important source of water for communities and their livestock is shrinking day by day.
Dama Mohammed, fetches water in a small jerry can from a pond in Beda’as kebele, near the town of Denan. Her two children are helping her so they can take home the water for her cows which are too weak to make the journey. The children are also giving water to the camels.
Over 155,000 children in the lowlands of Somali and Oromia regions have dropped out of school so they can help fetch water - often travelling long distances - or look after other children while their caregivers try to find water for their families and cattle. Children who are out of school are at risk of exploitation or are being pushed into dangerous coping mechanisms.
In drought impacted areas in Somali region,170,000 malnourished children and 100,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women need urgent nutritional support.
Last year, in Somali region over 100,000 severely malnourished children were admitted for treatment across the whole region – not just drought impacted areas.
This year, in Somali region, the projected number of severely malnourished children is estimated to be at over 250,000 due to multiple causes namely conflict, drought, and economic downturn.
UNICEF and partners plan to reach an estimated 155,000 severely malnourished children with treatment throughout 2022 across the entire region of Somali.
SOUNDBITE (English) Bashir Sheik Mohammed, Ethiopia Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF:
“UNICEF is supporting in coordination with the regional health bureau, deployed mobile clinics as part of preventing, detecting early and treating children suffering acute malnutrition. This is part of the strategy that we appreciate to minimize unnecessary deaths among children and it's a critical integrated package of life saving with sanitation, promotion, treatment of acute malnutrition and treatment of common illnesses and including vaccinations.”
To date, in the drought-impacted areas in Oromia and Somali regions, some 4.4 million people are currently facing critical water shortages.
SOUNDBITE (Somali) Iman Magan, Drought Impacted Mother:
“My name is Iman Magan, I am from the Debele District. I left Gelile-el early this morning. There is a severe drought there. There is massive thirst, exhaustion, and many other problems. The situation is difficult. My child is suffering, and we are facing difficulties. I left Gelile-el this morning and came to Debele. I came seeking a medication for my child. He was checked up and diagnosed with malnutrition. He was given medication and nutritious meals. I was met with great care.”
It is also projected that in 2022, an estimated 850,000 children will be severely malnourished across the four regions due to multiple causes namely conflict, drought, and economic downturn.
In response, UNICEF, in close coordination with the local authorities, is working to provide life-saving assistance to those desperately in need. This includes the rehabilitation of boreholes and water schemes, emergency water trucking, treatment of severely malnourished children and providing emergency education and child protection support.
UNICEF’s drought response appeal for impacted areas in Ethiopia is USD $31 million in addition to the overall humanitarian appeal of USD $351 million. This specific funding will target more than 2 million vulnerable people in Afar, Oromia, SNNPR and Somali regions.
