“First of all, we have to agree on a truly ambitious global biodiversity framework at the upcoming CBD COP15. We need a Paris moment for biodiversity, and this is a top priority for the EU. We want the COP15 to be a genuine transformative moment for biodiversity and this requires a strong political agreement from all the highest levels.”

“Current initiatives, regulations and efforts have proved insufficient to tackle the global crisis of plastic pollution, in particular in the marine environment. And it’s essential to get plastics under control and the only way to do is globally, having a global agreement. Now about 140 countries are calling for the establishment of the, of the intergovernmental negotiating committee with the view to agree on a global agreement on plastics. More than 70 of them have already clearly stated that this new instrument should be legally binding one.”

“2022 will hopefully be the year that shows how all of us together and each of us separately, can make a difference and bring about the long awaited Global Green transition. I'm more than convinced that this transition is not only the one that we owe to future generation, it's also the one that will help us build back better after the pandemic.”

“2022 will hopefully be the year that shows how all of us together and each of us separately, can make a difference and bring about the long awaited Global Green transition” said a European Union (EU) spokesperson.
Briefing journalist today (03 February) on the UN's Ocean and Biodiversity agendas from the EU perspective, Virginijus Sinkevičius, EU Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, said that “first of all, we have to agree on a truly ambitious global biodiversity framework at the upcoming CBD COP15”. He added “we want the COP15 to be a genuine transformative moment for biodiversity and this requires a strong political agreement from all the highest levels.”
Sinkevičius also emphasized how crucial is get plastics under control and insisted “the only way to do is globally, having a global agreement."
He said that about 140 countries are calling for the establishment of the intergovernmental negotiating committee for a global agreement on plastics. “More than 70 of them have already clearly stated that this new instrument should be legally binding one,” he added.
On oceans, Sinkevičius said that the European Union is committed to reach an ambitious agreement on high seas, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement.
Finally, he stated that the Global Green transition “is not only the one that we owe to future generation, it's also the one that will help us build back better after the pandemic.”
