2. SOUNDBITE (English) Roland Schiling, UNHCR Spokesperson:
“The first relief plane just landed bringing thermal blankets. We hope that this will give some relief for people. People are still exposed to the elements which, as you can imagine, is just weather conditions, are horrific. People are trying to edge from Ukraine, but we have also people who have to sleep in tents because accommodation and facilities are limited, although there's tremendous support here in Moldova and to all Moldovan society. But more needs to be done and we are here to help that Moldovans are able to support all these refugees.”
A humanitarian airlift organized by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency arrived in the Republic of Moldova on Wednesday (02 Mar) at the international airport of Chisinau. The aid comes from UNHCR’s Dubai-based global stockpile and consists of approximately 8,000 thermal blankets for refugees fleeing Ukraine across the border to Moldova.
This airlift is the first shipment of a humanitarian aid supply pipeline being established by UNHCR in response to the Ukraine situation.
