“I have been committed to undertaking this visit, the first visit by a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to China in 17 years. Because for me, it is a priority to engage with the government of China directly to see how we can collaborate on human rights issues domestically, regional and global for development, peace and security to be sustainable locally and across borders. Human rights have to be at the core.”

High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, today (25 May) met virtually with Chinese President Xi Jinping. She made these opening remarks and said it was “a priority to engage with the government of China directly to see how we can collaborate on human rights issues domestically, regional and global.”

Bachelet said, “for development, peace and security to be sustainable locally and across borders, human rights have to be at the core.”

The High Commissioner said, “China has a crucial role to play within multilateral institutions in confronting many of the challenges facing the world currently, including threats to international peace and security, instability in the global economic system, inequality, climate change and more.”

In conclusion, she said she looked forward “to deepening our discussions on these or other issues and hope my office can accompany efforts to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights, justice, and the rule of law for all.”
