“We don’t know whether this year is angry with us or is nature? We don’t have food this year; nor even shelter for children. our children are suffering from mosquitoes [while] even us the elders are [barely able to] tolerate [the situation].”

“I lost my husband and he left me with four children. Now the tukul [mud hut] I have is destroyed by floods. I don’t know where to relocate my children as a single mother.”

“The damage is quite visible. We are verifying the assessment report given to us. As you know resources are very much limited. We want to know the people who are really in need of support and they have told us the priority is NFIs [Non Food Items] followed by food and followed by wash and health. So tomorrow we will have an opportunity to meet the bigger partners in Yambio led by the RRC so that we can plan to use our limited supplies in Yambio and some supplies in Juba to immediately start responding and helping the most affected vulnerable groups.”

Floods in Mvolo, Western Equatoria, have displaced some 5,000 people and created untold misery. Circling above Mvolo is an integrated team of peacekeepers from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Together with its humanitarian partners, they travelled to assess the impact of climate change on communities and to ensure help is provided to those who need it the most.
Upon touching down, they hear pain-filled accounts from community members sheltering at a school compound.

With no idea about what tomorrow might bring, despair looms large over the newly displaced, as lives are lost, homes and livestock swept away and the fear of disease sets in.

For Russom Habtegabriel, team leader of the World Food Programme in Western Equatoria, it is a grim reality for humanitarian partners as they struggle to prioritize aid following reduced donor funding in South Sudan.

The UN Peacekeeping mission and humanitarian partners urged local authorities to relocate communities to higher ground.
