Storyline

Before departing from Ukraine today (13 Oct), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Chief Rafael Grossi told journalists in Kyiv that “the idea is that the shelling stops” around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and stressed that the establishment of a protection zone “is really urgent.”

IAEA Director-General Rossi, who returned to Ukraine after a meeting with President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg said, “it is, of course, counterintuitive to talk about protecting something which is being shelled and take weeks and months to protect it.”

He added that he is “trying to go as fast as I can” in negotiations towards the establishment of the protection zone.

Asked about the detained deputy director of the nuclear power plant, Valeriy Martynyuk, Grossi said he had raised the issue with the Russian authorities.

As air raid sirens could be heard in the background, he said, “I have been discussing with the Russian authorities this issue and reiterating that this is not acceptable. As you know, I had a direct intervention in a previous case and in this case as well."

Speaking of his conversation with President Putin, the IAEA Director-General said, “I said to him, I said to the Russian government, the IAEA cannot recognize annexation. This is a matter that goes beyond nuclear issues. It’s a matter that has to do with the United Nations Charter and international law. Yes, very clearly. I talked to him directly.”
