They are the ones who communicate with the community, they are the ones who are in the community, so we need their assistance for us to be able to carry out our mandate to fight against sexual exploitation and abuse.”

Storyline

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), through its Conduct and Discipline Team, convened and connected with women’s representatives in Gurei, Juba, to organize a ‘Stand Down Day’ designed to raise awareness of the need for collective action to uphold the rights of women.

Zero tolerance for Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) is a motto for the UN family worldwide. In South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, women and girls have been disproportionately impacted by years of civil war and conflict.

SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Bessong, Conduct and Discipline Outreach, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):

They are the ones who communicate with the community, they are the ones who are in the community, so we need their assistance for us to be able to carry out our mandate to fight against sexual exploitation and abuse.”

Led by UMISS’ Conduct and Discipline Team, the activity was held under the ambit of the ongoing 16 Days of Activism.

Local communities, women’s groups, representatives from UNMISS and UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes came together for this meaningful experience.

SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Bessong, Conduct and Discipline Outreach, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“Our goal is zero violence against women, our goal is zero SEA in South Sudan.”

Dancing, music, stirring speeches and a timely reminder for all to ensure prompt reporting of any instance of SEA through community focal points and a dedicated hotline were highlights of this advocacy effort.
