“We have to say that despite the organization of regular elections, and we do welcome those, the credibility of some of them is very often called into question by certain actors who contest the legitimacy of the leaders arising from those elections. This contesting of results is very often done peacefully. But in other cases, however, this contestation takes violent forms such as the events that we saw recently in São Tomé and Príncipe.”

“ECCAS is currently working to implement an international fact-finding mission. It has invited the United Nations, the African Union, the Community of Sahel–Saharan States and the Lake Chad Basin Commission. This mission has been welcomed by the Chad authorities. It will shortly go to those four towns and villages where the violence took place to establish the facts, find those responsible and suggest ways and means to bring justice to the victims.”

“From the 29th of November, an international investigation mission from ECCAS composed of five members and conducted by the Commissioner of Political Affairs of Peace and Security and enjoying the support of the Office of the Resident Coordinator of the UN to São Tomé and Príncipe is being operationalized. This mission to date has enjoyed the cooperation of the civilian authorities and the São Toméan military and significant support from the United Nations. It is already met with numerous stakeholders, and it will deliver its report at the regarding the mission before the end of this month.”

The United Nations top official for Central Africa today (8 Dec) said contesting of election results in the region “is very often done peacefully. But in other cases, however, this contestation takes violent forms such as the events that we saw recently in São Tomé and Príncipe and Chad.”
Briefing the Security Council in New York, Abdou Abarry, who is the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) welcomed the organization of regular elections but said “the credibility of some of them is very often called into question by certain actors who contest the legitimacy of the leaders arising from those elections.”
The President of the Commission of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Gilberto da Piedade Veríssimo, told the Council that ECCAS is currently working to implement an international fact-finding mission to Chad.
Da Piedade Veríssimo said the mission, which would include the United Nations, the African Union, the Community of Sahel–Saharan States and the Lake Chad Basin Commission “will shortly go to those four towns and villages where the violence took place to establish the facts, find those responsible and suggest ways and means to bring justice to the victims.

A coup d'état attempt was thwarted by São Tomé and Príncipe authorities on 25 November. Cruel and inhuman acts were allegedly committed by military personnel against men accused of taking part of the coup attempt.
