The World Food Programme (WFP) appeals for more access points to the worst affected areas by the earthquake in Syria.
WFP has scaled up its emergency food assistance in Syria and Türkiye since the beginning of the crisis, reaching over 300,000 quake-affected people in both countries, and plans to reach nearly 900,000 people.
Within 24 hours from when the earthquake hit Türkiye and Syria on 6 February, WFP provided hot meals and ready-to-eat rations to the victims.
WFP has reached more than 90,000 people in Syria (89,305) through hot meals and ready-to-eat rations.
In Türkiye, more than 200,000 Syrian refugees and Turkish citizens displaced by the quakes – have received family food baskets in camps.
The ready-to-eat food rations and hot meals do not require cooking facilities and provide immediate relief for families battling freezing temperatures.
Syria is in a particularly dire situation; the earthquakes have further compounded what was already one of the world’s largest hunger crises.
Communities closest to the earthquake’s epicenter were already struggling with the impact of 12 years of conflict, climate change, and economic downturn.
WFP has been actively assisting Syrians since the beginning of the conflict but needs more access and funds to sustain the response and scale it up.
More than half the population, 12 million people, is food insecure.
WFP has been serving 5.5 million people each month with general food assistance, most in areas now severely affected by the earthquake.
Drawing on existing partnerships, supply chains, and food stocks, WFP has already provided emergency food assistance to more than 90,000 people affected by the earthquake across Syria.
WFP needs all parties to support and enable humanitarian access through all channels, cross-border, and crossline, to reach more quake-affected people and to replenish stocks for them and for the people who already receive WFP regular food assistance every month.
