“I have made a point of being present not to celebrate an anniversary but to mark the date that is a solemn date, a sad date. Tonight, it will be one year since Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine. For a year the Ukrainian people has been suffering. Since that night from the 23rd to the 24th of February 2022, they've been suffering bombardments purposefully targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. For a year the Russian forces have been committing intolerable abuses and war crimes.”

“There is no justification for these brutal and illegal aggression. Let us say it once again, and no matter how things develop, one thing is for certain, Russia has already failed. It counted on our division, but we have shown a united and resolute front to support Ukraine and the principles of the United Nations and will continue to do so for as long as it takes.”

“141 countries wrote their support to resolution for address and sustainable peace in Ukraine. 141 countries marked once again their strongest condemnation against this aggression and called upon Russia to comply with international law, with its own commitments, and to immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw its military forces.”

“The only country who decided to go to war is Russia. We all know that but please don't forget it, there is an aggressor and an aggresse, and they cannot be put on an equal footing. So, unfortunately, the time is the time of war. And President Zelenskyy presented a peace plan at the G 20, in November last year. We all decided to support it. This resolution is in a good part a follow up on this offer to dialogue and find the ways to a just and (how do you say it?) lasting peace.”
French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna today (23 Feb) said she had made a point of being present in New York, “not to celebrate an anniversary but to mark the date that is a solemn date, a sad date,” one year since Russia “launched its war of aggression against Ukraine.”
For a year, Colonna said, the Ukrainian people has been “suffering bombardments purposefully targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure,” and “Russian forces have been committing intolerable abuses and war crimes.”
The French Foreign Minister said, “there is no justification for these brutal and illegal aggression. Let us say it once again, and no matter how things develop, one thing is for certain, Russia has already failed. It counted on our division, but we have shown a united and resolute front to support Ukraine and the principles of the United Nations and will continue to do so for as long as it takes.”
Commenting on today’s General Assembly adoption of a resolution demanding that Russian forces withdraw from the territory of Ukraine, Colonna said, “141 countries wrote their support to resolution for address and sustainable peace in Ukraine. 141 countries marked once again their strongest condemnation against this aggression and called upon Russia to comply with international law, with its own commitments, and to immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw its military forces.”
Asked about the prospect of peace negotiations, she said, “the only country who decided to go to war is Russia. We all know that but please don't forget it, there is an aggressor and an aggresse, and they cannot be put on an equal footing. So, unfortunately, the time is the time of war.”
The General Assembly resolution received 141 votes in favour, seven votes against, and 32 abstentions.
