5. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“First, polluters themselves must take the lead. Those who produce waste must design products and services that are less resource and material intensive, smartly manage any waste created across all stages of their products’ lifecycle, and find creative ways to extend the lives of the products they sell. And they need to invest in waste management, recovery and recycling systems in the communities in which they operate.”

Storyline

Marking the first International Zero-Waste Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said, “We’re making a mess of our world. It’s time to clean up. Let’s work as one to build a circular, zero-waste future. For people and planet.”

Speaking at the high-level event of the General Assembly on the Zero-Waste Project today (30 Mar), Guterres reiterated that garbage is laying waste to our planet. It’s time to fight back, and launch a war on waste on three fronts.

First, he said, “polluters themselves must take the lead.”

Guterres explained, “Those who produce waste must design products and services that are less resource and material intensive, smartly manage any waste created across all stages of their products’ lifecycle, and find creative ways to extend the lives of the products they sell. And they need to invest in waste management, recovery and recycling systems in the communities in which they operate.”

Second is to “massively invest in the ability of countries, cities and local governments to develop and scale-up modern waste management systems, and policies that encourage people to re-use and recycle everything from plastic bottles to ageing electronics,” the Secretary-General continued.

And third, as consumers, the UN chief said, we must be far more responsible, adding that “All of us need to consider the origins and impacts of the goods and products we buy every day and rethink how we dispose of them.”

He reiterated, “We need to find opportunities to reuse, recycle, repurpose, repair and recover the products we use. And we need to think twice before throwing these items in the garbage.”

On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution at its seventy-seventh session to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste, to be observed annually. Türkiye, with 105 other countries, put forward the resolution.

Emine Erdoğan, First Lady of Türkiye told the delegates, “Humans have created this frightening landscape, unfortunately. But we know that it is in our hands to stop this destruction once and for all and save the world – our common home.”

She reiterated, “We are obliged as humanity to act and together because we will either win or lose altogether in this equation.”

The First Lady also said, “I'm proud to state that as Türkiye, we've never remained indifferent towards global matters. And we stand committed to be a part of the solution regarding environmental problems.”
Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, also spoke at the event.

She said, “Let’s be Waste-Wise together and change our lifestyle and mindset to save our planet. This will also help us in transition towards circular and green economy creating new and decent jobs for our future generations.”

Sharif reiterated, “Zero Waste is the first step towards creating waste-wise societies. The first step is to take responsibility and make a conscious effort to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics.”

The Executive Director of UN-Habitat also said, “We need to work together to create a culture of zero waste in our communities. This means supporting local businesses and organizations that prioritize sustainability. Ask them what they are doing to reduce waste before you buy their product.”

She continued, “We must also advocate for policies and investments at the city/local government level to make it easier for everyone to reduce, reuse, and recycle.”

During International Day of Zero Waste, Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, civil society, the private sector, academia, youth and other stakeholders are invited to engage in activities aimed at raising awareness of national, subnational, regional and local zero-waste initiatives and their contribution to achieving sustainable development. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) jointly facilitate the observance of International Day of Zero Waste.

Promoting zero-waste initiatives through this international day can help advance all the goals and targets in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including Sustainable Development Goal 11 and Sustainable Development Goal 12. These goals address all forms of waste, including food loss and waste, natural resource extraction and electronic waste.
