3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rosemary A. DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs:
“Palestinians deserve a life of justice and dignity and the realization of their right to self-determination and independence. The UN position is clear, the occupation must end. A two state solution that will bring lasting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike, must be achieved in line with international law, UN resolutions and previous agreements. We want to see an independent state of Palestine living side by side with Israel in peace and security, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.
4. Med shot, Committee Chair Cheikh Niang
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Rosemary A. DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs:
“The rapid expansion of settlements illegal under international law is dramatically altering the land envisioned for a future Palestinian state. Violence including settler related violence remains pervasive. While evictions, demolitions and seizures of Palestinian own property continue unabated. Such actions undermine the prospects for the establishment of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state.”
6. Wide shot, delegates applauding
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mahmoud Abbas, President, State of Palestine:
“Nakba ladies and gentlemen did not start in 1948, and it did not stop after that date. Israel, the occupying power continues its occupation and its aggression against the Palestinian people, and continues to deny this Nakba and rejects international resolutions regarding the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland, to their cities and villages, of which they were displaced by aggression and terror.”
8. Med shot, Committee Chair
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Mahmoud Abbas, President, State of Palestine:
“Palestine will remain, and East Jerusalem is Palestinian Arab, regardless of whoever thinks otherwise, Trump or anyone else. This is our land. This is our city. We will not give it up.”
10. Wide shot, applause and cheers
Marking the 75th anniversary of the mass displacement of Palestinians known as the Nakba, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo, today (15 May) said, “Palestinians deserve a life of justice and dignity and the realization of their right to self-determination and independence.”
Di Carlo said, “the UN position is clear, the occupation must end. A two state solution that will bring lasting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike, must be achieved in line with international law, UN resolutions and previous agreements.”
She said, “we want to see an independent state of Palestine living side by side with Israel in peace and security, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.”
The political affairs chief said, “the rapid expansion of settlements illegal under international law is dramatically altering the land envisioned for a future Palestinian state. Violence including settler related violence remains pervasive. While evictions, demolitions and seizures of Palestinian own property continue unabated. Such actions undermine the prospects for the establishment of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state.”
The President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, for his part said Nakba “did not start in 1948, and it did not stop after that date. Israel, the occupying power continues its occupation and its aggression against the Palestinian people, and continues to deny this Nakba and rejects international resolutions regarding the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland, to their cities and villages, of which they were displaced by aggression and terror.”
Abbas, said, “Palestine will remain, and East Jerusalem is Palestinian Arab, regardless of whoever thinks otherwise, Trump or anyone else. This is our land. This is our city. We will not give it up.”
This anniversary puts the spotlight on the world’s longest-standing protracted refugee crisis and is a reminder that the population of over 5.9 million Palestine refugees registered with UNRWA continue to live amidst conflict, violence, and occupation and aspire to a just and lasting solution to their plight.
