Storyline

Secretary-General António Guterres today (24 May) said, “crisis atop of crisis is threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions across the Horn of Africa,” and called on donors to “act now to prevent crisis from turning into catastrophe.”

Speaking at a pledging event for the Horn of Africa, Guterres said “the longest drought on record. Mass displacement after years of conflict and insecurity. Skyrocketing food prices. And now, chaos and fighting have engulfed Sudan, radiating instability across the entire region.”

The Secretary-General recalled that last year, “lifesaving assistance” was delivered to 20 million people in the region and “helped avert a famine.” Now, he said, “support must match the scale of the challenge.”

“At this moment of difficulty and danger for the people of the Horn of Africa,” he said, “we cannot stand idly by,” and called on donors to “act together now – with greater urgency and far greater support.”

United States Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield for her part announced that the US “will provide nearly 524 million dollars in additional assistance to respond to dire humanitarian needs in the Horn of Africa.”

Thomas-Greenfield said, “when I visited Somalia this past January, I called on the international community to do more, to give more, to work together to end famine forever. Now is the time for us all to make good on that call.”

Today’s announcement, she said, “brings the total U.S. humanitarian assistance for response efforts to more than 1.4 billion dollars in fiscal year 2023.”

The pledging event, convened by the UN and Italy, Qatar, the United Kingdom and the United States, in collaboration with the three affected countries, aims to raise $7 billion for the region.

More than 43 million people across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia continue to suffer through one of the worst droughts in recent history, caused by five consecutive seasons of poor rains.

Years of conflict and insecurity have sparked mass displacement, while skyrocketing food prices and most recently, the fighting in Sudan, have compounded the situation.
