“The COVID-19 pandemic, a burgeoning climate crisis, widespread conflict, and the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have hobbled fragile and limited progress. But let’s be clear: our world was off track well before these upheavals. Ambition, urgency and solidarity have been lacking from the start.”

Without it, the 2030 promise is in danger of slipping away, sowing disillusionment, mistrust, and resentment; imperiling the planet; failing women and girls; and denying opportunity and hope for millions of people.”

“Just two weeks ago, on 3 and 4 July, the world saw the hottest days on Earth ever recorded globally and chances are this dooming record will soon be broken again and again. We are past the point of urgency for action, we are at the point of alarm. And yet this is not the time to panic, it is the time to act. Excellencies, As we move forward, it is imperative that the 2030 Agenda continue to be our roadmap for the way ahead. Governments, organizations, and individuals around the world must persevere in efforts to achieve the SDGs by 2030.”

Addressing the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) Secretary-General António Guterres today (17 Jul) said COVID-19, the climate crisis, and widespread conflict, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “have hobbled fragile and limited progress,” but he made clear that “our world was off track well before these upheavals.”
Guterres said, “ambition, urgency and solidarity have been lacking from the start.”
The Secretary-General said, “this is the High-Level Political Forum. And the world is crying out for high-level political action. Action to make the Sustainable Development Goals a reality – for everyone, everywhere.”
Without it, he said, “the 2030 promise is in danger of slipping away, sowing disillusionment, mistrust, and resentment; imperiling the planet; failing women and girls; and denying opportunity and hope for millions of people.”

In his remarks to the Forum, General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi said, “be courageous. Be ambitious. Be determined in your vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future. She said, “as we move forward, it is imperative that the 2030 Agenda continue to be our roadmap for the way ahead. Governments, organizations, and individuals around the world must persevere in efforts to achieve the SDGs by 2030.”
The theme of the HPLF is “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels.”
The HLPF will support the mid-term review of the implementation of the SDGs and the preparations for the 2023 SDG Summit – the HLPF to be convened under the auspices of the General Assembly in September 2023.
