Storyline

Unity State, South Sudan, is enduring the brunt of the climate crisis in the world's youngest country. Currently, the region is facing its fourth consecutive year of widespread flooding, transforming entire communities into islands scattered across the floodwaters.

Thong, a community cut off from food, trade, and medical supplies for over two years, was recently visited by a riverine patrol of peacekeepers from Mongolia serving with The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This visit marked the first contact by any UN or humanitarian organization since 2022.

“Thong, Thong is a good area of arable land with a lot of community. But now after the water community are sitting idle, only doing river work in order to feed their young or feed the family.”

Residents, who once covered the 7-kilometer journey to town on foot, are now stranded with only a few boats shared by a community of 5,000.

“That [flooding] is why you see the situation now. The community are eating only waterlily and fish which is not enough, even. There is no good food and the community are suffering. Indeed. In terms of for farming, they [people of Thong] don't have enough land to cultivate their crops. And that is the main issue for if there is a food, if there is food, things will be alright. But if there is no food, the community will stay in disarray.”

Malnutrition is a grave concern for many, and due to their isolation, access to aid or medical support is significantly limited.

“We spent almost two year here. The community are requesting all the organizations to do their support in order to get something because the area there is a no cultivation. The area you see there is no enough land to cultivate the crops.”

Reaching communities like Thong has proven difficult, and many humanitarian organizations have failed to reach them at all, leading to concerns within the community of being left behind.

However, UNMISS remains dedicated to making all affected communities accessible, regardless of the challenges. Patrols like this pave the way for further humanitarian assistance from partners and the South Sudan government.
