The Security Council today (2 Aug) unanimously adopted a draft resolution expanding the mandate of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVIC) to monitor and verify the implementation of a bilateral ceasefire between the Colombian government and the guerrilla group Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) that is set to begin tomorrow (3 Aug).

The United Kingdom’s representative, Fergus Eckersley, told the Council that the unanimous adoption of the resolution “demonstrates the continued commitment of the Security Council to peace in Colombia. “

Eckersley said, “the UK welcomes the expansion of the mandate of the UN Verification Mission. And we remain committed to supporting Colombia along its path to peace and security for all its people.”

The UK was the penholder of the draft resolution on Colombia.

Brazil’s Ambassador Sérgio França Danese told the Council that “as a guarantor country, Brazil hails the decision of the Council to authorize the Mission to verify the implementation of the ceasefire agreement with the ELN, and in addition, we hope that a similar agreement will be achieved as soon as possible with Estado Mayor Central group together with verifiable protocols.”

The resolution also indicates the Council’s willingness to consider mandating the Mission to monitor and verify a ceasefire with the Estado Mayor Central Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia-Ejército del Pueblo (EMC FARC-EP).
