Storyline

Following the transition plan of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) withdrawal from the country, the head of the mission Bintou Keita travelled to South Kivu province.

Bintou Keita, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and head of MONUSCO, met local authorities, peacekeepers, communities of internally displaced people and discussed transfer of MONUSCO’s responsibilities, including the protection of civilians, to the Government of the DRC.

According to the mission, MONUSCO is working closely with the authorities to ensure that national capacities meet minimum-security requirements to allow for a responsible drawdown of the Mission.

The Special Representative also visited the handover ceremony of a temporary bridge over the Luzira river in the territory of Kalehe. The bridge was rebuilt by Chinese peacekeepers.

Keita also visited bases in Mikenge and Uvira. In Mikenge, 5,000 displaced persons are depending on protection from MONUSCO blue helmets. Fleeing armed groups, the displaced set up their camp near the MONUSCO Pakistani base.

In Uvira, Keita visited the MONUSCO Jordanian base and met with women peacekeepers.
