Over 3 million people are now internally displaced in Sudan, following months of conflict in the country. In White Nile State, access to the camps continues to be challenging due to the rains. UNHCR and partners are working to provide assistance to displaced families.
Families continue to flee their homes in Sudan seeking safety in parts of the country as the humanitarian situation there worsens. Over 4 million people have been forced to flee to neighbouring countries since the start of the conflict in April. This includes refugees and asylum-seekers who fled to neighbouring countries, and South Sudanese forced to return to their country.
Within Sudan, over 3 million people have been internally displaced. In White Nile state, the influx of refugees from Khartoum and other conflict-affected areas in Sudan has seen the refugee population grow from 297,000 to 428,000. Overwhelming services and the limited resources available.
Congestion in camps and limited services exposes refugees to major protection risks. Many families have been on the move for weeks – with very little food or medicine. Rising malnutrition rates, disease outbreaks and related deaths continue to be observed. In addition, more cholera and malaria cases are expected in the coming months due to flooding from the continuing rains and inadequate sanitation facilities.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is also engaged in flood mitigation and response to flood-affected populations in White Nile State. UNHCR has helped rehabilitate a ferry to improve the access across the White Nile River.
Access to the camps continues to be challenging due to the rains, disrupting planned activities, including community-based protection training, registration, protection monitoring and site development of Abu Dolou.
