In Juba, South Sudan’s capital, the United Nations in South Sudan (UNMISS) Human Rights Division in support of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) hosted a workshop on upholding human rights.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sergeant-Major Zeindia William Tong, Officer, South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF):
“Today I learnt a lot. Before coming here, I didn’t even know what being human was. Now I know my rights and other people’s rights as well and I am grateful for that. I now know the rights of fellow soldiers as well like myself.”
The three-day forum aims at enhancing the SSPDF’s capacity to carry out their responsibilities while ensuring that the rights and dignity of every citizen is upheld.
SOUNDBITE (English) Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel Thiep Anol, Officer, South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF):
“Any military of the world is an institution of any government, and our army is not an exception, so it is important that our military should know human rights because daily practices, when we go out during operations, we deal with people. And when we deny these people their rights, that becomes a problem because it is levelled against the army that army is causing some violations. So here we want to train our army to have the law at their [finger]tips to help them during their training, their operations and maintenance.”
Thirty-five SSPDF commissioned and non-commissioned officers participated in the training.
