Also, the protection of children is paramount and it's the responsibility of all parties to the conflict and to achieve this protection we need to achieve, we need to get the aid to them, and get the services to them. Also, the protection of humanitarians on the ground. This needs to be guaranteed so we can do our job in the Gaza Strip.”

Storyline

A UNICEF spokesperson today (13 Oct) said Salim “we are at the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe” and reported initial numbers of “more than 500 children killed and more than one 1,600 injured” in the Gaza Strip.

UNICEF’s Communication Officer for the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office, Salim Oweis, said, “hospitals don't have electricity to provide health services to the patients and the thousands of injured people in Gaza. Water Supply being cut and the infrastructure being damaged, along with sanitation network, means that waterborne diseases can be on the rise. It's a real concern now. So overall, the situation is really, really dire. And if it continues like that it's going to be a real humanitarian catastrophe.”

Regarding Israel order for civilians in Gaza to evacuate the north of the Strip, Oweis said, “we're talking about over one million people that have no safe place to go to, from the north to the south. We're talking about these people who already have been struggling with this violence for days and being displaced maybe for several times for some of them.”

The spokesperson called for, “one, humanitarian pauses, and two, humanitarian corridors, safe passages for it to reach the children and families in the Gaza Strip.”

Also, he said, “the protection of children is paramount and it's the responsibility of all parties to the conflict and to achieve this protection we need to achieve, we need to get the aid to them, and get the services to them. Also, the protection of humanitarians on the ground. This needs to be guaranteed so we can do our job in the Gaza Strip.”

Oweis said, “humanitarian Action in Gaza, humanitarian response is impeded by the violence and hence that's where our calls to cessation of fires comes and is needed because without the cessation, we cannot continue our work and you cannot serve the children and we cannot have the children access the basic services that they really need and deserve.”

Large-scale grave violations against children have been reported in Israel and in the State of Palestine, including the killing and maiming of children, abductions, and attacks on civilian infrastructure and essential public services such as schools and health facilities.

While the main humanitarian focus is on the Gaza Strip, currently under heavy bombardment, the situation in the West Bank remains tense, with confrontations between Israeli Forces and Palestinians continuing for a fifth consecutive day in multiple locations, leaving many killed and injured.

UNICEF, to respond to urgent needs for safe drinking water in Gaza, has provided 5m of water treatment reagent to sustain the UNICEF-supported desalination plant providing water for 75,000 persons. UNICEF has further released medical supplies prepositioned in the Gaza Strip to hospitals, including medicines for at least 1,600 people. UNICEF response will continue to focus on responding to the needs of around one million children currently facing an urgent and pressing need for protection and humanitarian assistance.
