“We conveyed to him in crystal clear terms, the three objectives that we are trying to accomplish as soon as possible in the next few days, in the short period of time: ceasefire and stopping the aggression against our people; to have humanitarian assistance to reach our people – the 2.3 million in the Gaza Strip - as soon as possible. And for the SG, he has a huge presence of UN agencies on the ground, including in the Gaza Strip itself, and he has a responsibility to look after that huge presence of all of these agencies.”

“They are responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. This is war. This is aggression. This is an attack against two million plus Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. So, it is the business of the Security Council, and we have to find ways to force the Security Council to shoulder its responsibility.”

“Brazil believes that the Council should act in the face of an almost unprecedented escalation in violence and unfolding humanitarian catastrophe. The Council has a crucial responsibility, both in the immediate response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis, as well as in later stages when intensified multilateral efforts will be needed to restore a peace process. Neither Israelis nor Palestinians should have to endure similar suffering ever again.”

“Israel’s actions of collective punishment on Gaza citizens, as well as its demands to evacuate more than one million civilians in 24 hours and concentrate them in a de facto ghetto in the south of the sector are also unacceptable and can lead to irreversible catastrophic consequences, regionally and globally.”

“Let me be clear the responsibility for the looming war in the Middle East, to a large extent, lies on the United States. It is Washington that recklessly and selfishly blocked the work of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators, in an effort to monopolize the peace process are limited to imposing an economic peace with Israel and the Palestinians and other Arab countries without solving the Palestinian question. We consistently warned against this saying it will back for one day, so it did.”

Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group of ambassadors today (13 Oct) after a meeting with Secretary-General António Guterres, Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said its priorities are a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance to reach the 2.3 million in the Gaza Strip - as soon as possible.
Mansour said there is “a huge presence of UN agencies on the ground, including in the Gaza Strip itself,” and the Secretary-General “has a responsibility to look after that huge presence of all of these agencies.”
The Palestinian Ambassador said, “this is war. This is aggression. This is an attack against two million plus Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. So, it is the business of the Security Council, and we have to find ways to force the Security Council to shoulder its responsibility.”
Earlier, after closed consultations of the Council, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said, “Brazil believes that the Council should act in the face of an almost unprecedented escalation in violence and unfolding humanitarian catastrophe.”
Vieira said, “the Council has a crucial responsibility, both in the immediate response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis, as well as in later stages when intensified multilateral efforts will be needed to restore a peace process.”
He said, “neither Israelis nor Palestinians should have to endure similar suffering ever again.”
