Storyline

Children and families in Gaza have practically run out of food, water, electricity, medicine and safe access to hospitals, following days of hostilities and cuts to all supply routes. UNICEF staff have continued to respond to the critical needs of children across the Gaza Strip, but access is becoming increasingly difficult and dangerous.

UNICEF has distributed nearly all its prepositioned supplies, and worked to keep the only functioning desalination plant in the entire Gaza Strip running in much-reduced capacity. Medical supplies and medicines have also been provided to hospitals, but given the number of injuries, hospital beds and essential medicine—including anesthetics—are quickly running out. Drinking water, latrines and dignity kits were assembled in Cairo, Egypt, prior to their delivery to the Egyptian Red Crescent to reach the most affected children and families in Gaza.

UNICEF is calling for an immediate ceasefire as 1.1 million people—nearly half of them children—have been warned to move out, ahead of what is expected to be a widescale military assault into one of the most densely populated places on earth.

UNICEF calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities, and for all parties to unconditionally protect children from harm and afford them the special protection to which they are entitled, in accordance with their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law. No place is safe for children while this intense fighting continues. All parties must uphold the rights of all children, including children captured in the course of operations. This includes children perceived to be associated with parties to the conflict. Children’s rights to life and protection from any violence are paramount. Abduction of children by a party to the conflict constitutes a grave violation. Any children in custody of parties to the conflict should be protected and immediately and unconditionally released.
