Storyline

UNICEF is calling for an immediate humanitarian pause to alleviate the suffering and prevent a desperate situation from becoming catastrophic.

Taha and his family have fled from bombing and stays at a school turned shelter in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip. "We all sleep on one small mattress. There's no water...there's no food, there's no bread." When asked what his wishes are, Taha says " I wish to sleep. I wish to play. I wish to go to the bathroom. I wish to shower."

UNICEF calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities, and for all parties to unconditionally protect children from harm and afford them the special protection to which they are entitled, in accordance with their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law. No place is safe for children while this intense fighting continues. All parties must uphold the rights of all children, including children captured in the course of operations.

This includes children perceived to be associated with parties to the conflict. Children’s rights to life and protection from any violence are paramount. Abduction of children by a party to the conflict constitutes a grave violation. Any children in custody of parties to the conflict should be protected and immediately and unconditionally released. The delivery of aid is a matter of life or death for children in Gaza.
