“I learned about the peace and how to protect ourselves and how to protect the rights of women, especially the violence. How can we do about it? So I am very, very happy. When I go home, I really try to talk to other people about this and inform them that let us leave a beating our wives. We have to protect against violence and even our wives also let them not to beat us because we are sometimes beaten by our wives, which is also violence against men also.”

“We are here to create awareness to the community, aim to reduce the rate of gender-based violence in the community. And we had interactive sessions with the community and the public raised a lot of questions. They understood the concepts of gender-based violence and they recommended more sensitization and especially community policing for the youth to support the fight against gender-based violence in the community."

Storyline

In Bazungua, South Sudan’s Western Equatoria state, today (04 Dec) some 200 community members were sensitized on preventing and ending gender-based violence at an UNMISS-facilitated workshop as part of the ongoing commemorations for 16 Days of Activism.

With the knowledge acquired, Eva James, a mother of six, promises to take a step forward on reporting rape cases within her community, with the hope that perpetrators will be held accountable.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Eva James, Bazungua resident: “Cases of rape are very common in our area. Every day, we hear about a rape committed by armed people. They could come to rape and loot people at gun point, in front children and then escape. Today, I am happy that we are being sensitized on how to report for further action by authorities.”

Local communities believe such workshops will help promote peace.

SOUNDBITE (English) Isaac Pisiru, Bazungua resident: “I have a lot about peace [building] how to protect ourselves and how to protect the rights of women especially [end] violence [against women]. I am very happy [and] when I go home, I will advocate to other people about.”

UNMISS remains committed to working with all partners in ending all forms of violence against women and supporting survivors.
