The Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Yasmine Sherif said, “Climate change is about the planet; education is about humanity. And neither can live without the other.”
Today (08 Dec) is the COP28 thematic day dedicated to youth, children, education, and skills to amplify youths’ demands and call for increased investment in education to equip children and youth with the skills and tools to tackle the climate crisis.
In an interview at COP28, Sherif said that 62 million are children and adolescents whose education is disrupted as an immediate and direct consequence of climate change.
She added, “I'll give you just one example. For instance, the 29,000 schools that were damaged or destroyed due to flooding in Pakistan, the climate change that we see through droughts in Somalia, the Horn of Africa, earthquakes in Afghanistan, and so forth.”

She stressed on the importance of understanding of the interrelation between climate change and the disruption of education, “which in turn is related to a new generation that is, first of all, not educated and, secondly, has no knowledge about climate change and certainly cannot take over to adaptability, mitigation, prevention of climate change.”
