3. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Skau, the World Food Program's Deputy Executive Director:
“We are ready to deliver to another million people within a couple of weeks, should the conditions allow and let me reiterate that caveat that - should those conditions allow - which would be opening up more crossings and a humanitarian ceasefire to be able to reach people across the Strip.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Skau, the World Food Program's Deputy Executive Director:
“When it comes to the food security situation, we managed to do during the seven day pause a survey, and what we found there was that half of the population are starving. The grim reality is also that nine out of ten people are not eating enough or not eating every day and don't know where the next meal is gonna come from.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Skau, the World Food Program's Deputy Executive Director:
“The humanitarian operation is really on the brink of collapse. And it's just not possible to deliver in an orderly fashion, under these conditions. What we really need is to step up the volumes. And for that we need more crossings, Kerem Shalom, not least, but I would say beyond that. We would also like to see of course, commercial and trucks going in and so that we can as soon as possible, assume the cash and voucher system, because that's a program that also has broader implications or impact on the economy.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Skau, the World Food Program's Deputy Executive Director:
“While of course important that donors step forward now to our Gaza response, what we want to avoid is that that is taken from other crisis that are also in dire need of additional assistance. So while we are in a relatively good space in Gaza, I would ask for is flexibility, and hopefully that also, countries in the region can step forward in a more substantial way for funding from others maybe to be able to be used elsewhere as this situation is dire also elsewhere.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Carl Skau, the World Food Program's Deputy Executive Director:
“The dialogue with staff continues in WFP as it does in other agencies that you have been reading about. I think it's just natural that the polarization and the tension that we see more broadly in society is also reflected within our organization and maybe even more so given that we operate in these environments. But I think with efforts that has been made in dialogue, we are now able to move forward and to get back to focus on assisting people which is really what we need to do given the urgent needs before us.”

Storyline

World Food Programme's Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau said that the Programme is ready to deliver to another million people within a couple of weeks in Gaza, “should the conditions allow,” which would be “opening up more crossings and a humanitarian ceasefire."

The deputy chief of WFP today (14 Dec) briefed reporters on this recent visit to Gaza.

“When it comes to the food security situation,” Skau said, “we managed to do during the seven day pause a survey, and what we found there was that half of the population are starving.”

He also said, “The grim reality is also that nine out of ten people are not eating enough or not eating every day and don't know where the next meal is gonna come from.”

Echoing the UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths, Skau reiterated, “The humanitarian operation is really on the brink of collapse. And it's just not possible to deliver in an orderly fashion, under these conditions.”

The WFP deputy chief added, “What we really need is to step up the volumes. And for that we need more crossings, Kerem Shalom, not least, but I would say beyond that. We would also like to see of course, commercial and trucks going in and so that we can as soon as possible, assume the cash and voucher system, because that's a program that also has broader implications or impact on the economy.”

Asked about funding, Skau said, “While of course important that donors step forward now to our Gaza response, what we want to avoid is that that is taken from other crisis that are also in dire need of additional assistance.”

He asked for flexibility with the funds, and “countries in the region can step forward in a more substantial way for funding from others maybe to be able to be used elsewhere as this situation is dire also elsewhere.”

Asked about Cindy McCain, the current head of WFP, Skau said, “The dialogue with staff continues in WFP as it does in other agencies that you have been reading about. I think it's just natural that the polarization and the tension that we see more broadly in society is also reflected within our organization and maybe even more so given that we operate in these environments.”

He added, “I think with efforts that has been made in dialogue, we are now able to move forward and to get back to focus on assisting people which is really what we need to do given the urgent needs before us.”
