Storyline

IFAD member states from around the world have gathered in Paris, France to pledge their continued commitment to the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development and its work supporting the world’s small-scale farmers and producers.

Small-scale farmers produce one third of food globally and up to 70 percent of the food in low- and middle-income countries. Yet, they suffer from hunger and poverty and are affected by climate change.

To date 48 Member States have pledged US 1.076 billion to replenish its core resources. Ten countries have increased by more than 50 percent from their previous contribution, and 31 countries have committed to their highest contribution ever, marking a record level of financing achieved for IFAD’s 2025-2027 program of work.

IFAD’s fourth replenishment session was hosted in Paris over the last two days by Angola and France. The French Government who had earlier pledged 150 million dollars to the UN agency, explained why they were committed to working with IFAD.

French Minister Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economy, Finance and Recovery of France said, “most of these poorest people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Therefore, agriculture is the answer. Agricultural development is the answer. Agricultural independence is the answer.”

He continued, “IFAD is a key player. It enables the development of the most vulnerable countries, and above all it accompanies what is at the heart of our ambition with the president of the republic, the structural transformations of agriculture.”

The Angolan government emphasized the key role that IFAD plays in its rural development.

Carmen Sacramento Neto, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources said,

“We rely on IFAD to ensure the resilience we seek to build, taking into account climate change and all other factors that hinder our development”.

They emphasized the need to work with young people and women to improve the lives of rural people in their country.

Sabrina Elba, who with her husband Idris Elba, have been Goodwill Ambassadors for IFAD for 4 years, explained how she had seen first-hand the impact of its work.

She said, “IFAD projects do make a difference. They help communities adapt to climate change. They make it possible for farmers to get the resources they need. To benefit from training. To connect to markets.”

She added, “I hope you see how all of this makes it possible for small-scale farmers to grow more, and earn more – and feed themselves, their communities.”

IFAD’s President Alvaro Lario closed the session by thanking member states for their continued commitment to IFAD and its vital work with rural people. He said, “ I am convinced that the path we have paved today is the path to a better and more sustainable, inclusive and fair future for all. Together, we can make a lasting impact and create a world where no one is left behind.”
