During a five-day visit to Ethiopia, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, Ted Chaiban, urged the international community to immediately scale up their support for children and families to avert a deepening humanitarian catastrophe throughout the country.
Chaiban visited one of the hardest-hit drought areas in Tigray where malnutrition rates have surpassed the emergency threshold.
SOUNDBITE (English) Ted Chaiban, Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF:
“I’m here in Tigray in February, at a time where families should be enjoying the fruits of their crops to sustain themselves and their families.”
To further complicate the situation, there is a public health emergency taking place across the nation with outbreaks of cholera, measles, dengue fever and malaria.
SOUNDBITE (English) Ted Chaiban, Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF:
“But in Tigray, like in much of Ethiopia from North to South, we’re facing the results of an El Niño-driven drought, of different disease outbreaks, including cholera, of the knock-on-effect of COVID and conflict and the coping mechanisms of family are at the absolute stretch.”
UNICEF, in strong collaboration with the Government of Ethiopia and other partners, are working tirelessly to respond to the crises, providing nutritional support, as well as access to safe water, routine immunization, education and child protection services. But much more needs to be done.
SOUNDBITE (English) Ted Chaiban, Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF:
“We need to support children and their families now during this upcoming lean season which is going to stretch into September to avoid the worst.”
“We need to be able to support health extension workers to be able to treat children against severe acute malnutrition and other childhood illnesses. We need to be able to get food aid to the 6.5 million individuals that are in need of food aid now.”
“We need to be able to have water systems in place that both provide clean drinking water for families but also allow them to have household-based food security activities to sustain themselves.”
The UN in Ethiopia is seeking US$3.24 billion, and UNICEF is appealing for US$535 million to ensure children get the help they so desperately need.
SOUNDBITE (English) Ted Chaiban, Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF:
“UNICEF has been a key partner of Ethiopia for the last 70 years. We’re here working in health, in nutrition, in education, in water sanitation and hygiene, and child protection to support the population. We are appealing for 535 million dollars and every dollar that you contribute makes a real difference for children and their families.”
“We cannot forget Ethiopia. We need to be here during this difficult time for children and their families.”
Ethiopia is facing multiple emergencies, including the El Niño-driven drought that has hit Tigray and Afar regions and other parts of northern, central, and southern Ethiopia and children and their families are in need of humanitarian assistance.
SOUNDBITE (Tigrinya) Eyerusalem Atsbeha, Drought-Impacted Mother:
“My name is Eyerusalem Atsbeha.”
“We are in a drought. We used to get it from farmers but now there is no grain.”
“There are strong winds and cholera because there isn’t enough water in the area.”
For 2024, it is projected that almost one million children will suffer from acute malnutrition and around 350,000 pregnant and lactating women will be malnourished. In addition to the drought, there is a public health emergency with disease outbreaks, largely triggered by climatic hazards.
