“We thank the World Health Organization, doctors and everyone in the hospital, also our journalists, and everyone who helped us and extended a helping hand to Nour.”

“I am very happy that my son will be treated and by God’s will he will be able to walk on his feet again, and recover his health state. I am truly happy.”

“We’ve sent several appeals to the international community, the World Health Organization, human rights and child rights associations regarding inpatient cases in Kamal Adwan Hospital, which are cases of malnutrition, and cases of dehydration, there were two children whose situation was very critical, and unfortunately, with lack of services, the lack of supplies, the lack of food, to threat them.”

“The World Health Organization responded, and today WHO have secured the transportation of two children.”

“We arrived today in Kamal Adwan with one of our emergency medical teams specialized in pre-hospital care and referral medicine to ensure a safe referral of two children to South Gaza and then further to a third country for further specialized care.”

“So here we have Fadi. Fadi came from us, from north Gaza. Fadi is a patient who was diagnosed with malnutrition and cystic fibrosis. And basically, what that means is that the child does not have all the nutrition requirements for his particular age with the cystic fibrosis. This is a genetic related condition.”

“So the nutrition plan for him incorporates ten steps. That means we start using we treat him from hypothermia. He doesn't have any adipose tissue. We also to correct hypoglycaemia we also correct any micronutrient deficiency that they have. We also treat for any infection. And then at the same time we also start treating him for his malnutrition. We provided him, we started him with the high calorie high fat diet. And we also give him what we call fat soluble vitamin.”

“So for him, we will just focus on nutrition with antibiotic treatment, put him on oxygen to help him with breathing. And then at the end of the day, he will still need to be referred somewhere where he can get additional support. (NOTE: Both patients will be referred on to Egypt)”

“Fadi was doing well before the war because he was getting the necessary food and he was taking the necessary milk and medicines. But during the war his condition deteriorated, as these things were not available, no fruits, no vegetables. His condition deteriorated and he started losing his health little by little, the boy felt weak and lean, therefore I took to a couple of medical clinics, but there weren’t enough medicines. I then took him to Kamal Adwan Hospital, where the doctors saw his condition and contacted the press so they can find a way to get him out of the country for treatment. With the help of Palestinian Red Crescent we were able to travel from the north to the south, we are in the south now, and by God’s will we be heading to Egypt in the coming days.”

20. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Nour’s Grandmother:
“Nour was suffering from Leukemia and she had a bone marrow transplant in Israel. At first, she was doing better, but after the transplant, her body developed an auto immune disease. Her condition deteriorated to the point that she stopped moving her hands, she stopped walking, and was reliant on a wheelchair. Her condition was getting worse each day. And during the war her condition worsened more so and she became dehydrated, and malnourished. We barely got her to Kamal Adwan Hospital as her condition was very bad.”

“Today we came from the north to south, the way here wasn’t easy at all, it was very long and very difficult, but because we made it, we are happy, we are not tired at all, thank God.”

Over the weekend, a WHO team managed to evacuate two six-year-old patients from Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza -- to receive care abroad.
One child has cystic fibrosis, the other has leukemia.
Two caregivers were evacuated with them. WHO reiterates its appeal for sustained and safe medical transfers and ensure all children and sick patients in need of urgent care have a chance to survive.
