“When we were displaced at the beginning, we used to eat rotten bread because of the high prices of food here. This is the only place where I can get food for my children, I have 3 boys and 1 girl. They need food, where do I get them food from? I couldn’t afford to buy food; everything is so expensive, and I have no money. This local kitchen is our safe place, we come here every day.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Marika Guderian, Palestine Dep Country Director, World Food Programme (WFP):
“The World Food Programme has been able here to serve one million people every month with food because they completely depend on us. But we have challenges. We don't have the necessary security guarantees to work here. The people also need to be safe. So for that, for us to really be able to scale up to avoid famine, so that people don't have to die because they don't have food, we need security guarantees for us as humanitarian but also for the people we serve in Gaza”

"We eat whatever we can find, we eat, and we say thank God. I just want them to stay safe and sound. My biggest fear is that when someone leaves, they won’t come back again. That’s all I care about. That they come back safely. My biggest fear is that my son will go out and never come back. I don’t sleep until everyone is back home.”

According to the world Food Programme (WFP), as we approach the 6-month mark in the conflict, famine is ever closer in the north of Gaza.
Malnutrition among children is spreading at a record pace, and one of three children below the age of two is now acutely malnourished or “wasted”.
Some 70 percent of the population in the North is facing catastrophic hunger.
WFP is providing desperately needed food to more than a million people in Gaza each month despite enormous challenges.
WFP distributes ready-to-eat food parcels, hot meals, wheat flour and specialized products to stave off malnutrition.
In March, WFP managed to get 47 trucks into the north, an improvement in February, but far from what’s needed.
WFP warns that daily deliveries are needed to halt famine.
As famine closes in, WFP needs humanitarian staff and supplies to be able to move freely and safely across Gaza.
