Talking to reporters after meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Secretary-General António Guterres today (6 May) said this was “a moment of great concern” and made “a very strong appeal to the Government of Israel and to the leadership of the Hamas in order to go an extra mile to materialize an agreement that is absolutely vital.”

Guterres said “this is an opportunity that cannot be missed” and stressed that a ground invasion in Rafah “would be intolerable because of its devastating humanitarian consequences and because of its destabilizing impact in the region.”

The General Assembly will hold a formal plenary meeting on Tuesday (7 May) to hear an Address by Mattarella.
