9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Sergio Mattarella, President, Italy:
“Critiques are heard, legitimate and sometimes not unfounded, about the functioning of the United Nations. We all would like more from the UN system, without often being willing, in turn, to give more by entrusting it with tasks, responsibilities, and means to enhance its effectiveness, without being subjected to the game of mutual vetoes that risks paralyzing its life.”

11. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Sergio Mattarella, President, Italy:
“The UN represents the sole platform capable, if adequately supported by its member states, of addressing the challenges threatening peace, security, and development. I would like to emphasize this concept: ‘adequately supported,’ as the United Nations relies on the political will and contributions of its member states. Any endeavor to revitalize its activities and operational methodologies must henceforth derive from the individual commitments of the 193 member states to increase their engagement.”

13. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Sergio Mattarella, President, Italy:
“The significant transnational challenges we face, coupled with the increasing number of regional conflicts prone to escalation, far from questioning the role of the United Nations, underscore its indispensable and crucial nature in serving humanity. An increasingly representative and effective UN is needed. Every contrary path, every absence, leads to worsening prospects for the human condition.”
